Update for copydesk.org e-mail usersColleagues: The planned changeover of copydesk.org accounts is moving more smoothly than we had thought it would, and I have some additional information to share with you. MAIL FORWARDING First, although we will be moving your account to Gmail on Saturday morning, you will be able to access your Everyone.net account for another month. And, because of this, we believe you will be able to easily move your e-mails by forwarding them to your address. In other words, after Saturday, we're confident that all you'd have to do to have your old messages would be to forward them to (your username)@copydesk.org. We have no way to test this before Saturday, which is why we're keeping the old e-mail system running (but not receiving mail) through March 15. POP FORWARDING? One member asked if POP forwarding was available. In other words, downloading the messages to an intermediary account. As far as I know, POP and IMAP is unavailable for our service -- save for the folks who paid extra (more on that below). MOVING CONTACTS Unfortunately, Everyone.net doesn't provide a way to move your contacts. This will require you to manually move your addresses over. If we do find a solution, we will share it with you. For now, planning on having to that one by one. If you have your addresses saved on your computer in an app (a new entry to AP stylebook, I've seen), you can easily import them to Gmail (see their documentation for details). MAIL PLUS ACCOUNTS If you were one of the six people who purchased a Mail Plus Protection account (the $29 service that hides the ads and such), you will need to make sure that you cancel this service with Everyone.net. I have never used this service, so I don't know how it works; but I know that you will need to cancel this service and return your account to "Regular" status so that you are not charged. ACES cannot do this for you. NEW TEMPORARY PASSWORD Come Saturday, we will need to create each account manually (there are currently 42), and I will need to set you up with a password. In an effort to eliminate confusion, I will be using "ACES@aces123" ... that's ACES@aces123. When you enter Gmail for the first time, you will likely want to change that. You can find those under the "Settings" link at the top right of the Gmail interface. FORWARDING AVAILABLE Say you're like one of our Executive Committee members (who shall remain nameless) and you absolutely hate Gmail. Don't fear. We can easily set up a "forward" which passes your mail on to the e-mail address of your choice. This feature must be set up manually, and we're happy to do so. Simple e-mail me (dan@copydesk.org), and we'll take care of the rest. It's important to know that doing this will delete all of your mail and contacts, so be sure to save your data elsewhere BEFORE contacting me. E-mail changeover for copydesk.org usersColleagues, As a copydesk.org e-mail user, I have some exciting news to share with you and some very important information regarding your account. Please take a moment to read this e-mail in its entirety. Early on Saturday, Feb. 13, ACES will discontinue use of Everyone.net, our current e-mail provider, and begin using Google Mail, better known as Gmail. This will result in a lot of changes for you, many of them for the better. Your e-mail address will not change. Because of the changeover, however, YOU WILL NEED TO SAVE ALL of your e-mails, contacts and any other information on your account to your computer or another e-mail account before we flip the switch. There is no migration service available, and ACES will not be able to retrieve your information once we move to Gmail. For users who have only a forwarding account, you will see no change. Beginning Monday, Feb. 15, we will give you a chance to stop your forwarding and open a Gmail account at copydesk.org. Gmail is a complete and robust e-mail system, with enhanced security and great functionality -- it currently hosts more than 160 million users worldwide. Here are some of the features that will available to you beginning Saturday: --A lot of space: 25 Gb -- good luck trying to use all of it And there's a lot more. To learn more about Gmail, visit http://mail.google.com/mail/help/intl/en/about.html But, again, you will need to save all your data from the existing account BEFORE Saturday, and ACES will not be able to retreive this information once the changeover is completed. On Tuesday, I will e-mail you again with information on your new login address and password, which you will be able to change Saturday. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at dan@copydesk.org from a non-copydesk.org account or call me at 714-785-6800. Thanks for your understanding and continued support of ACES. DANIEL HUNT |
