Hank Glamann is assistant managing editor of The Plain Dealer, where he is in charge of promoting editing excellence. He works with editors throughout the newsroom and directly supervises the newspaper’s copy desks.

    Glamann is a member of The Plain Dealer’s Operating Team of senior managers and serves on the newspaper’s Promotions Committee, helping to coordinate marketing efforts. He is the editor of (more), a monthly magazine for the 430-member newsroom staff that explores a variety of journalistic issues, and is a primary contributor to The Yellow Pages, a weekly compendium of comment and critique.

    He is a founder of the American Copy Editors Society and a senior member of the organization’s executive committee. Glamann was among the organizers of the six national conferences that the group has staged to date in cities from coast to coast; the events attracted a total of more than 2,350 journalists and featured many of the leading educators in the field.

   Glamann has long been active in national efforts to promote journalistic excellence and improve the professional lives of journalists as a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ human resources committee. He has served as the editor of and a regular contributor to the "On Copy Editing" column in ASNE’s national magazine The American Editor.

   He works extensively as a journalism educator and provides consulting services to newspapers, primarily major metropolitan dailies, in the United States and Canada. Headlines and other editing issues are his specialty. 

  Before joining The Plain Dealer in August 2000, Glamann was executive news editor of the Houston Chronicle, where he directed the operations of the news desk and was in charge of staff development for editors. 




Hank Glamann is a co-founder of,
and active participant in, ACES. 

  He was named a recipient of the 1998 Hearst Eagle Award, presented to acknowledge outstanding contributions to the Hearst Corp., parent company of the Chronicle. He worked as a recruiter for the Chronicle and the Hearst Newspaper Group, and represented both organizations in various capacities at numerous industry gatherings.

  Among his other industry honors are a first-place headline-writing prize from the Associated Press Managing Editors and multiple design and headline awards from the Hearst Newspaper Group, the Headliners Foundation, the Houston Press Club and the Press Club of Dallas.

 He has long been active in programs to promote literacy, among them the annual corporate spelling bee sponsored by the Houston READ Commission.

  He helped to coordinate the Chronicle’s summer internship program in conjunction with Dow Jones, and served as a faculty member for the newspaper’s high school journalism workshop each summer. 

   From 1997 through 1999, he was the Chronicle’s news editor for administration.

In this position, he coordinated projects for the managing editor and launched a program of regular training sessions for editors. He became executive news editor in 2000.

    He attended the University of Houston, majoring in radio and television, and previously worked as a broadcaster.
