"Pick that up for me, would you, Deirdre?"
--Catholic woman from Monty Python's "Meaning of Life"

Deirdre (DEE-drah)

Yes, the first "r"
is silent.

"Deirdre of the Sorrows," a Celtic legend: A princess of Ulster elopes with her lover, Naoise, to escape marriage to King Conchobar. After the king murders Naoise, she kills herself.

My action figure:
"Deirdre, Mystic Knight of Air"

(I found this on EBay; how could I not buy it?)

Sandy (left) and Jake

I'm an assistant copy chief on the Metro desk at the Los Angeles Times, and a member of the ACES executive committee.

Aside from those highly important duties, I am married to Bret and we have two dogs, Sandy and Jake. Sandy is a golden retriever-border collie mix and Jake is an Australian shepherd mix. They were adopted in January 1997 from the Arizona Humane Society.

When not editing stories about court cases, murders and mayhem, I enjoy reading novels about ... court cases, murders and mayhem.

We live in Long Beach, Calif., in a 1920s Spanish-style bungalow, and as a direct result, house projects have become a hobby. I like to garden, and especially enjoy fussing over the nine rose bushes we have in the front yard.

Bret competes in triathlons, and we spend a lot of summer weekends at races. We generally stay in California, although we've driven to Lubbock, Texas, and Provo, Utah.

Vacation travel takes us a little farther from home. In the past few years we've been to Japan, England and France. Next on our wish list are Australia and New Zealand!
