More on Denver sessions

We've added more to the list for April

The society is packing this year's conference with some the best sessions targeted for just about every level and interest among our membership. Among them, more seminars and discussions for the world of online editing, which is what many of last year's attendees said they wanted.

Revised lineup of sessions (Updated 3/25)

We'll keep updating the schedule on the conference page and on the discussion board as we get closer.

BOOK THAT HOTEL: Remember that in order to lock in the ACES rate, you must reserve your room by March 19. Details are on the conference page.

National board election results

Two members will be new to the board in May

New board members

Four seats on the ACES Executive Committee were up for election this year. The board received four nominations by the deadline and voted unanimously at the January meeting to elect the four candidates by acclamation, forgoing a paper ballot election. The four seats will be held by two returning incumbents, Gerri Berendzen and Sue Blair, and two new board members, Peter Parisi and Jim Thomsen. Their terms begin in May. 2008 conference fellows

Three copy editors have been granted fellowships to attend the 2008 national conference in Denver:

Kirsten Akens, the copy editor at the weekly Colorado Springs Independent. Kirsten is a 1996 graduate of Colorado College who spent 10 years working for nonprofit human services organizations before turning to newspapers. She has worked at the Independent since 2006.

Alysha Brennan, a copy editor/designer at the Citizens' Voice in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Alysha graduated in May from Temple University, where she was secretary and then president of Temple's student ACES chapter. She has worked at the Citizens' Voice for five months.

Kate Kompas, news editor at the St. Cloud Times in Minnesota. Kate has worked at the Times since her 2002 graduation from Iowa State University. She started as a reporter then joined the copy desk in 2005. She worked her way up to assistant news editor and now is news editor, serving as the newspaper's main slot.

The fellowships were set up to enable younger copy editors or those at smaller publications to attend the conference and receive training for free in exchange for eight hours of volunteer work.
