AP on gender-neutral pronoun?

AP on gender-neutral pronoun?

Postby KiraC » 4:42 pm 04/05/2009

Our house style on gender neutrality is to pluralize the sentence or to use "he or she" -- "he" by itself is taken to mean a male. In more casual columns, our writers are allowed to use "they" instead of "he or she."

I can't find an entry on this topic in the AP Stylebook. Have I missed it, or was it perhaps removed? I don't have any old copies handy.

Thanks.

Under "his, her" AP bars "his or her" and, by inference, "he or she" "when an indefinite antecedent may be male or female". It says that "frequently" the best option is to revise to use a plural "they" or "their".

I also like the singular "they/their", myself, but that's not to everyone's taste.

Thanks. I have the electronic edition of AP, and I just didn't search the right way. That's what I thought the AP rule was.

Much appreciated.
