Change is today’s buzzword — and today’s reality — for newspapers and for other media.
What does that mean for copy editors?
Explore that idea and more traditional editing concerns at the annual Florida ACES workshop June 22 in St. Petersburg.
The event is for copy editors working in any media, from students through old hands.
Topics and speakers will include:
Alternative story forms, presented by Sara Quinn of the visual journalism faculty at The Poynter Institute.
Ethics in the online world, Jan Leach, professor of journalism at Kent State University in Ohio.
‘Wait, is That Journalism?’ session on online editing, Anne Glover, AME for online features at the St. Petersburg Times.
What copy editors need to know about journalism and the law, Rick Kenney, assistant professor of journalism at the University of Central Florida.
Editing when you just don’t have the time, John Schlander, executive news editor, St. Petersburg Times.
Writing effective headlines, Jeff Rubin, copy desk chief of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
Careers outside the copy desk, a panel featuring Leigh Caldwell, SNN News 6 executive producer; Patty Kim, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, media relations coordinator; Anne Glover, St. Petersburg Times.
ACES President Chris Wienandt will moderate a lunch discussion on copy editing and it's future.
Workshops will be at The Poynter Institute, 801 S. Third St., St. Petersburg. Lunch will be provided.
Florida ACES is a chapter of the American Copy Editors Society, which aims to improve the quality of journalism and the working lives of journalists.
