Derogatory newspaper nicknames

Postby Jim Thomsen » 12:25 am, Wednesday, December 20, 2006

We all know a bunch of these ... let's collect the particularly acidic and clever ones here.

The ones that come immediately to mind are:

— The Yakima (Wash.) Herald-Republic, known in the community as the "Horrid-Repulsive."

— The Ellensburg (Wash.) Daily Record, often referred to as the "Dully Recorded."

— And every paper called "Daily News" is inevitably mocked as the "Daily Snooze."
"Can we have a talk, editor to editor ... and really, almost human being to human being?"

— Charles Lane (Peter Sarsgaard), "Shattered Glass"

The Florida Times-Union is called the Slimes-Onion.

I used to work for the Mandarin News, also called the Mandarin Snooze. My college paper was the Spinnaker and I called it the Spin Maker.

Make your own mocking newspaper name!

the Anytown Chronicle = Anytown Comical
Dispatch = Disgrace
Times = Slimes

Or just do like my father and call it "that liberal rag."

I'm sure the Canton (Ohio) Repository gets called the "Suppository."

The Charlottesville Daily Progress used to be (and probably still is) called "The Daily Regress".

When there were two dailies in Dallas, one conservative and one more sensationalistic, they were known as the Morning Snooze and the Crimes-Herald.

Next door in Fort Worth, the Star-Telegram is widely called the Startlegram.

My hometown paper, the Wichita Eagle-Beacon, was the Eggs and Bacon.

Every "Journal" paper has been called the "Urinal" at some point. The Topeka Capital-Journal got doubled down as the Crapital-Urinal.

Somewhere BONG's Chief Copy Boy assembled a long list of these; I think there was even a poster made.

I think mottoes make better targets.

For instance, here we have The Japan Times, a centrist mouthpiece that declares "All the news without fear or favor." This is often recast as "All the news without fear of flavor."

And the variations on the NY Times' "All the news that's fit to print": e.g., "All the news that fits, we print." (It would be more apt for the post-redesign WS Journal.)

One cannot forget the former Yonkers Herald-Statesman, known by one and all as the Sterile Hatesman.
That's the press, baby, the press, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Another for Renee's mix-and-match list:

Some people refer to The Trentonian as "The 'Toid" (because its a tabloid, a big front page headline that sensationalize the news, a "page 6 girl", etc., etc.)

In print, the Trentonian has referred to The Times (of Trenton) as "the other paper" (so they don't have to name their competitor in print)

Okay, so this one isn't derogatory at all, but my hometown community weekly's motto is "The sweetest strawberries this side of heaven," because of the preponderance of strawberry fields and stands throughout the county.

Decades ago, Hart Seely, a highly original mind who may even still work at the Post Standard, observed the brand name (American Standard) on the men's room fixtures and remarked that if the Sunday Herald American, the daily Herald-Journal and the morning Post-Standard were to merge, they might reasonably undertake a sideline of selling American-Standard Urinal cakes. Now that they have merged, of course, the idea doesn't seem so ridiculous.

I wanna play!
Places I worked:

The Columbia Missourian = the Manurian

The Southern Illinoisan = the Southern Illusion (whose motto was "only the sky covers Southern Illinois better)

Of course, no nickname could compete with the Maneater, the Missouri student newspaper. I used to hawk it on campus, walking around yelling "Maneater! 10 cents!" And I was young then, and had no idea what I was saying ...

My paper, the Kitsap Sun, used to be called the Bremerton Sun.

Longtime readers still call us "The Daily BS."

The Charlotte Observer has been known for years as the Charlotte “Disturber.” It was meant in derogatory way, but thinking about it, it could be construed as a compliment. Recently, people have been calling it the “slop server” which is much better as an offensive nickname.

As with the Charlotte paper, the News & Observer of Raleigh was and probably still is *fondly* called the News & Disturber.
