Headline Contest 2000
General
Contest is open to all ACES members. Entries will consist of five headlines
and accompanying copy. Accompanying decks, labels, standing heads, subheads
and jump heads are considered part of one headline. Editors may enter more
than one division, but only once per division. There is no entry fee.
Unless otherwise noted, all headlines entered will have been published
with their accompanying copy in English in a print newspaper (on paper)
during 2000. Display headlines, headlines for art and those from other
media (including syndicates, wire services, magazines and Web sites) will
be entered in the Open Division.
Divisions
A: Open (See above.)
B: Major Papers (circulation 250,000 or more)
C: Large Papers (circulation 125,000 to 249,999)
D: Medium Papers (circulation 50,000 to 124,999)
E: Small Papers (circulation 49,999 or less)
F: Students (work by high school or college students in student publications)
Entry Format and Procedure
On two 4x6 inch index cards, at least half an inch from the top, print
or type your headlines. Include decks, because the cards will be used for
first-round judging. On the top right-hand corner, write which division
you are entering.
Submit clearly marked tearsheets or screenshots. On the back of the entry form, photocopy your membership card. Each entry must be completely packaged in a standard-size pocket folder. Multiple entries may be sent together in a single envelope or box.
Judging
Entries with any headline that clearly is inaccurate or unfair or has
any error will be disqualified. Entries that do not follow the rules may
be disqualified. Judges may move entries to a different division. Judges
may decide not to make any award in a given division. Judges’ decisions
are final.
Awards will generally be made for bodies of work, sets of five headlines. Judges may also choose individual headlines for special citations.
To promote objectivity, judges will not reviewuate work from their own publications. Judges and the contest coordinator are ineligible to enter.
First-round judging will be based primarily on initial impact, how well the headlines do the job of attracting the reader to the story. Criteria may include creativity, mechanics, how well the headline pleases the ear, breaks, filling the space and visual appeal (if applicable), accuracy, fairness and clarity. Headlines will be compared to accompanying text.
Judges are Courtney Barrett of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Bill Mcfayden of the Santa Barbara News-Press, Jeanette Chavez of the Denver Post, Randy Weissman of the Chicago Tribune, Anne Glover of the St. Petersburg Times, Wallace Schroeder of The New York Times and Mimi Burkhardt of the Providence Journal.
Results
Winners will be announced during the ACES conference in April 2001.
Presence is not required to enter, win or receive prize. Prizes will be
plaques. Recognition will include letters to winners’ supervisors and may
include listing in ACES publication. ACES will decide how to dispose of
entries, and may not acknowledge or return entries. ACES may choose to
have headlines published.
