2000 election results

The American Copy Editors Society has announced the re-election of three members of its executive committee and election of two new ones.

Those re-elected are William G. Connolly, a senior editor at the New York Times; Mary Frances Monckton Hendrix, a copy editor and page designer at the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., and Chris Wienandt, an application specialist over CCI Edit/MS Word at the Dallas Morning News.

Carrie Camillo, a rim and slot editor at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Matt Woody, a copy editor at the Arizona Republic, were elected to the committee for the first time.

Connolly, who also serves on ACESŐ education committee, is a popular workshop presenter at the annual conference. He has pledged to continue his work to broaden the appeal of copy editing and to strengthen the organizationŐs force in the industry.

Hendrix recently assisted with ACESŐ editing standards booklet and has been active in the societyŐs fund-raising efforts. One of her goals is to offer more support for member copy editors through education and industry influence.

All who attended ACESŐ 1999 conference in Dallas know Chris Wienandt as the leader of that local organizing committee. His vision for the organization includes increasing awareness in more newsrooms nationwide and developing more benefits for members.

Camillo, who was instrumental in ACES fund-raising before her election to the executive committee, has pledged to work to increase the stature of copy editing among students making career choices.

The executive committee terms of these five members will last for about 19 months. Next year, ACESŐ annual elections will switch to a spring schedule to coincide with the new conference schedule. At that time all terms will revert to the original two-year length.

ACES secretary Anne Ferguson-Rohrer of the Washington Post, who oversaw this yearŐs election process, reported that turnout was about three times that of last year.

All full members are encouraged to participate in next yearŐs vote. Those ballots will be distributed prior to AprilŐs conference in Long Beach, Calif.
