Who can run for office?

The American Copy Editors Society conducts elections each year for its Executive Committee. The number of positons vary by year, as the officers and board positions are staggered. Candidates are announced during the annual conference.

ELIGIBILITY: Nominations can be made by anyone who is a member in good standing by a date determined by the board. This date usually falls around the first of the year. A prospective candidate may nominate himself or herself. Full, associate, student and scholastic members are eligible to make nominations, but all nominees must be full members of ACES. All nominees who comply with the requirements on the nomination form will be accepted as candidates and listed on the ballot.

TERMS: Two years

DUTIES: Members of the Executive Committee shape the policy of the society and take on responsibility for projects and routine tasks. Officers have additional duties, as outlined in the bylaws at www.copydesk.org/about/bylaws.php. ACES operates by virtue of the voluntary efforts of its members, and anyone seeking a seat on the Executive Committee must be willing to spend a few hours each week on the business of the organization. Tasks can include, but aren't limited to, researching topics, contacting sources, organizing meetings, making phone calls, sending e-mails, writing proposals and newsletter articles, working on surveys and fundraising. Members of the Executive Committee also are expected to attend the national conference and other periodic meetings, as well as to take part in a monthly conference call.
