2010 ELECTION

<< Teresa Schmedding | David Sullivan >>

CANDIDATE PROFILES

Christine Steele

Capital Group Cos. (Los Angeles), running for Executive Commitee

Current job: Senior Copy Editor: Edits marketing materials for shareholders of a mutual fund company.

Nominated by Sandee Curry

Nomination responses

How has the nominee contributed to ACES?

Christine has volunteered at the silent auction, at the merchandise table, as a blogger at the conference, and has been on a panel. She also danced in front of everyone at the Miami conference. She is already a member of the board, and is enthusiastic about making a lasting contribution to the organization.

What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position?

She is dedicated, patient, a true professional and one of the most dedicated copy editors I have ever met.

If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure?

All I know is that she will put her best efforts into making ACES a better organization for all those involved.

Candidate's responses

How should ACES help convince managers -- and readers -- of the value of copyediting?

Copy editors instead should help convince managers. We are the ones who are editing and working hard to prevent errors. We know where to find the resources, how to fix an error and make a story read better. Our success depends on our own motivation to educate ourselves through ACES and make connections with those who can help us. It's this sharing that will convince a manager of the value gained from ACES involvement. I would like to brainstorm with others about their publications and how we can convince readers. I think our credibility has slipped some this past year, because of reduced staff and other issues. How can we correct that?

What additional services or benefits would you like to see ACES offer its members?

It would be a benefit to members if we could collaborate with various retail outlets or book dealers and receive discounts on magazines, newsletters or books in our field, especially ones that will help us on the job. Maybe we could obtain a group membership code to use, including for online use.

What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware of who we are?

I have already been making others aware of ACES. I am part of the ACES Publicity Committee and help send out press releases and post to journalism Web sites about the society. In my workplace, I already share (and will continue to do so) copyediting resources from ACES, distribute conference handouts after each conference, and plan occasional social events to get other corporate communications copy editors together and network.
