2010 ELECTION<< Bill Hickman | Teresa Schmedding >> CANDIDATE PROFILES![]() Lisa McLendonThe Wichita Eagle, running for Vice President/ConferencesCurrent job: Deputy desk chief: Editing copy and writing display type for print and online, coordinating the "Grammar Monkeys" podcast, and other supervisory duties. Nomination responsesHow has the nominee contributed to ACES? I've been ACES secretary for the past 2½ years. I've attended the past eight national conferences and presented sessions at six. I've served on the scholarship committee and helped with the headline contest, and, in true copy editor fashion, done a lot of little, behind-the-scenes jobs for ACES. What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position? I've helped with the national conferences since joining the board and know what goes into planning and executing them. I organized the 2008 Wichita regional workshop and helped organize the 2009 Mizzou regional. I will work hard to keep the ACES conference vibrant, affordable and essential for any copy editor. If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure? ACES is working to reach more copy editors than ever, and I want our conference to remain the premiere training and networking event for any copy editor. We will offer a broad slate of sessions to benefit starting editors and veterans, in print and online, in journalism and in business. Candidate's responsesHow should ACES help convince managers -- and readers -- of the value of copy editing? We need to keep the focus on quality and credibility. Readers know when we make mistakes; we need to make it clear to management that when a publication cuts corners on quality, its credibility will start to suffer, and once readers' trust is gone, it's difficult to regain. How do we do this? ACES recently dedicated a board position to research, and we need to work on empirical studies that demonstrate the importance of error-free copy, both in print and online. Also, ACES needs to keep recognizing outstanding copy editors through awards and publicity on copydesk.org and in the newsletter. What additional services or benefits would you like to see ACES offer its members? I would like to see more regional one-day workshops and more editing resources available for members only on the ACES Web site. I think we've had success with the mentorship and internship programs and should expand those as we are able. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware of who we are? ACES uses social media and the Internet to reach members, but we need to expand our use of it to reach editors at small newspapers and online news outlets as well as editors in nonprofit and corporate settings. This means getting people who are already members more involved in spreading the word -- and giving them something to spread: new content online, regional workshops, awards, etc. Also, we need to increase publicity up the management chain: We need to tout our award winners, andclearly and concisely spell out the training opportunities ACES offers. |
