2010 ELECTION<< Niko Dugan | Lisa McLendon >> CANDIDATE PROFILES![]() William HickmanUniversity of Central Oklahoma, running for Executive CommitteeCurrent job: Professor: teach undergraduate classes in news reporting, computer-assisted reporting, Web communications, media law. Admitted to law practice in Oklahoma. Member, FOI Oklahoma (open records & open meetings issues in Oklahoma). Nomination responsesHow has the nominee contributed to ACES? Two presentations at national conference, Minneapolis, 2009 Contributor to ACES scholarship fund What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position? Will represent the academic community - important to have academic representation on the board as well as professional industry board members. If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure? ACES should take a serious look at the number of academic mass communication/journalism programs in the nation. Are the vast number of academic programs realistically supporting the diminished industry realities? Should these academic programs aim for a much broader employment scope? What's the relevance of, say, one state with three journalism programs that pumps out graduates to work at the Pottery Barn? Candidate's responsesHow should ACES help convince managers -- and readers -- of the value of copy editing? ACES members should offer themselves as guest speakers and/or editing workshop organizers at the company or institution where they work. Civic club connections could be a benefit -- if managers and executives are members of a civic club, go deliver a presentation to that organization. Obtain a directory of print and online media organizations, and conduct an information campaign to the executives and managers about copy editing (this same idea also is mentioned in answer No. 3 below). What additional services or benefits would you like to see ACES offer its members? Identify universities and vocational-technical institutions that offer technology-based courses that will add to existing copy-editing skills and knowledge. This is a job-enhancement issue. ACES can offer sources of technology training that will boost employment opportunities. It's no longer good enough to know how to edit - although that is the core of copy editing. Technology also has become embedded in the copy-editing employment picture. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware of who we are? Social media can help ... I would make maximum use of Facebook! I've seen social media groups on Facebook for various occupations ... research this for access to Facebook groups connected to media companies, as well as financial and health-related businesses. Also, locate a directory of online and print media. These directories will have staff listings that will be for the most part up to date. Contact the executives and managers listed to try to pass the word about ACES. |
