2010 ELECTION<< Bill Connolly | Niko Dugan >> CANDIDATE PROFILES![]() Matthew CrowleyLas Vegas Review-Journal, running for Executive CommitteeCurrent job: Business copy editor: Edit copy for print and Web, check facts and graphics, do layouts, write headlines. Nominated by Lisa McLendon Nomination responsesHow has the nominee contributed to ACES? Matthew has attended four ACES conferences and is a frequent contributor to the ACES newsletter. He writes articles on a variety of topics relevant to editing and is keen to offer ideas for new stories. And, of course, he produces them on time without prodding. What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position? In addition to his newsletter work, Matthew answers questions on ACES' online forum and offers ideas for the organization's future. In his previous campaign for the board, he recommended a members-only section of copydesk.org that would include the job board and Web-only content. He's also advocated for editing-focused webinars or podcasts. If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure? Matthew imagines ACES continuing to be a guidepost for ACES' traditional audience -- print, newspaper and Web editors -- and for its expanding audience of copy editors in other businesses. He wants ACES to continue to offer forums and resources for copy editors, in live events and online. Candidate's responsesHow should ACES help convince managers -- and readers -- of the value of copy editing? Unfortunately, I think a lot of readerships have discovered the value of copy editing by seeing mistakes increase in publications that have cut copydesks. We could let managers know how many facts we correct, how many spelling mistakes we avert and how we make muddy copy clear, by showing before and after versions of stories. There are many ways for readers to get distracted and leave; errors shouldn't be one of them. What additional services or benefits would you like to see ACES offer its members? I'd like to see ACES offer a members-only section at copydesk.org where members could see stories, job postings and other data. We could use this area for podcasts , live chats and webinars on copy-editing topics there similar to the ones Poynter does. We could also use it for things like the I-need-a-roomate board for the national conference. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware of who we are? I'd like to see us try to increase our cross-referencing of ACES between Twitter, LinkedIn and copydesk.org. Many of the threads that used to happen on the copydesk.org discussion board have migrated to Twitter; having a tweet alert users to new discussion board conversations may help drive some of that traffic back and may also encourage nonmembers to join. Perhaps we could hashtag the discussion board #acesdiscussionboard. |
