2010 ELECTION

<< Gerri Berendzen | Sue Bullard >>

CANDIDATE PROFILES

Susan Blair

Time magazine (retired), running as incumbent for executive committee

Previous job: As copy chief of Time, supervised a staff of 20 and devised and implemented processes to meet several weekly deadlines.

Nomination responses

How has the nominee contributed to ACES?

I have advocated for the expansion of the full-membership category to include copy editors from all media, especially magazines, and encouraged a wider range of conference topics to attract such editors. In the past year I led the executive-director search committee and organized the hiring process.

What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position?

Having served four terms on the ACES board, I know how to work collegially within the group and can provide perspective as new members are elected. My experience as a copy editor and copy-desk manager enables me to understand the concerns of those in either job.

If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure?

The hiring of a professional executive director will raise ACES' profile and increase outreach and funding. It also frees board members to better support copy editors as they face continuing challenges to their role in all media and to address media management about the relationship between copy editing and credibility.

Candidate's responses

How should ACES help convince managers -- and readers -- of the value of copy editing?

Keep a file of catches copy editors make that save their medium (and its reporters and editors) from embarrassment, loss of credibility and even legal action. When the value of copy editing comes into question, this record can be used in a nonconfrontational way to demonstrate the difference copy editing makes.

It's harder to persuade readers of the value of our somewhat invisible craft. However, feedback in letters and online comments on news sites leads me to believe that readers are becoming very aware that cutting copy editors leads to a diminution of accuracy and quality, and thus of reader trust.

What additional services or benefits would you like to see ACES offer its members?

Reciprocal arrangements for discounted conference rates with other organizations likely to be of interest to ACES members -- e.g., Online News Association, SND, NABJ, etc., -- would benefit not only our members but also those organizations, by making attendance at their conferences more accessible to a wider audience. Another target for special rate consideration is a subscription to Copyediting newsletter and the audio conferences and webinars it sponsors. A members-only area of the ACES website is long overdue and will be particularly valuable if it includes access to a directory of members.

What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware of who we are?

Now that ACES has reached beyond the world of print news, we need to enlist the help of new members in other kinds of editing jobs -- corporate, online, books, etc. -- to spread the word among their colleagues that ACES offers well-priced training and contacts to copy editors in all fields. The organization's increasing use of social media -- and making it known via our website and in publicity materials -- is certain to reach more and more potential members, as will mention in language-oriented blogs and perhaps occasional ads on journalism websites and even in (you remember it!) print outlets.
