CANDIDATE PROFILES

Christine Steele

Capital Group Companies, running for Executive Committee

Current job: Senior copy editor in the mutual fund industry. Copy-edit brochures, fund commentaries, annual reports, prospectuses for financial advisers and shareholders. Maintain department style guide. Mentor/train new copy editors. Co-chair of quarterly Copy Editors Forum.

Contributions to ACES: Christine has served on the ACES publicity committee for the past two years. She develops and distributes press releases and stories on events and awards within ACES. Christine also has been a volunteer at several conferences. From manning the merchandise table, running the book sale and writing for the Web to stepping in to handle whatever crisis erupts, she's always ready to pitch in and do whatever is needed.

Qualifications: Christine has an unfailing enthusiasm for ACES and quality editing. She would bring a unique and much-needed perspective to the board as a journalist working for a non-newspaper company. In addition, she's well-organized and has proven she can handle multiple tasks and the actual work that's required of board members.

Vision for ACES: Christine would like to be one of the first to represent nontraditional journalism copy editors and better connect them with traditional ones. Says Christine, "We speak the same language, use the same reference books and share the same love of editing. Our vision is in line with the ACES mission and traditional journalism copy editors: to provide answers to copy-editing questions and challenges through training, discussion and an awareness of common issues."

1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing?

ACES should continue to offer workshops in magazine, Web, and corporate communications copyediting, which applies to more than news. I think copy editors instead should help convince managers. We are the ones who are editing and working hard to prevent errors. We know who to call and where to find the resources, how to fix an error or make a story read better. Our success depends on the motivation to educate ourselves through ACES and make the connections with others who can also help us. It's the sharing of this that will convince a manager of the value gained from your ACES involvement.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

Other than the occasional book table featured at our conferences, is there a possibility of collaborating with various retail outlets or book dealers and receiving discounts on magazines, newsletters or books in our field? Could we obtain a group membership code to use, including for online use?

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

I have already been making others aware of ACES. I am part of the ACES Publicity Committee and help send out press releases and post to journalism Web sites about the society. In my workplace, I already share (and will continue to do so) copyediting resources from ACES, distribute conference handouts and souvenirs, and plan occasional social events to get other corporate communications copy editors together.
