CANDIDATE PROFILES


Missy Prebula

New York Times, running for Executive Committee

Current job: Staff editor on the national desk at The New York Times.

Contributions to ACES: I have been an ACES member and attended all national conferences since 1999. I have served on the Executive Committee for two years, and I am currently the chairwoman of the competitions committee. I have also led sessions at the conferences and served as a headline contest judge.

Qualifications: I care about this organization and am concerned about what the future holds for the industry. I have worked at The Denton Record-Chronicle in Texas, The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times, and those experiences have given me a broad perspective on the challenges we all face.

Vision for ACES: I would like the organization to build on a number of projects it has undertaken in the last few years, including the mentor program, internships and research. It is also critical for the group to continue to be a more forceful voice for copy editors throughout the industry.


1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing?

ACES needs to continue to focus on advocacy via industry Web sites, responding to threats to the craft or the seemingly endless reports on outsourcing. Conducting original research will also help raise the group's profile.

But much of this work, especially regarding individual managers, is a grass-roots effort. ACES must give its members the tools to help them demonstrate in their own shops what copy editors do and how integral they are to quality.

The group also needs to help its members with what could be any number of transitions -- new responsibilities in Web production, say, or even a new career in corporate communications.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

This has always been a subject of much discussion, and I think the board has made progress on a number of fronts over the past few years. Projects that have recently been started or are in some stage of development include ACES internships, a mentoring program and a redesigned Web site with certain areas restricted to members. The board does not have a huge budget, but it is always considering new and different ways to offer more to ACES members.

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

Again, raising our profile is critical, whether through advocacy, through industry Web sites or through advertising. Formal membership drives and outreach efforts are never a bad idea, but they are time-consuming and often not as successful as hoped. ACES has always been an organization that has grown through word of mouth, and we should continue to promote that notion among the membership. Social-networking sites like Facebook and Linked In are a good avenue for this; we can make our presence better known, reach out to potential members and foster a sense of community.
