Lisa McLendon

The Wichita Eagle, running for secretary

Current job: Deputy copy desk chief, The Wichita Eagle. I edit copy, write display type and do the usual miscellany for print and online, plus some supervisory duties.

Contributions to ACES: I have served as ACES secretary for 18 months. I have attended the past seven national conferences and presented sessions at five. I organized a one-day regional workshop in Wichita in October 2008. I've served on the scholarship committee and helped with the headline contest.

Qualifications: I've been in the post for a term already, putting my organized, detail- and deadline-oriented self to work for ACES, both in my specific duties as secretary and on other committees. I'm not afraid to take on extra work and I want to be a part of keeping ACES vibrant.

Vision for ACES:ACES has launched several new initiatives -- mentoring, internship, a person dedicated to research -- that I'd like to help nurture. ACES needs to become an even stronger public advocate for quality journalism while remaining a voice for copy editors and a reliable source of training for editors in any medium.

1.How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing?

ACES needs to keep the focus on quality and how it is a key factor in credibility. No matter how dramatic the changes in the industry, one thing should stay the same: the focus on clarity and accuracy in stories and display type. I think ACES' newly created research position is a great step forward in figuring out how to quantify the value of clean, error-free stories in print and online.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

We're off to a good start with the recent additions of mentoring and internship programs and a board position dedicated to research. I think we need to have more and fresher content on copydesk.org and offer more frequent and more specifically targeted regional workshops for members. We also need to explore joint training opportunities with regional press associations and related professional groups.

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

I'd like to use the power of social networking -- LinkedIn and Facebook in particular -- more than we do to let editors in non-newspaper fields know there is a group that represents quality in daily journalism as well as other news communication, no matter the medium. ACES has started reaching out to a broader range of copy editors, inviting them to become members and participate in the conference, and I think this is something we should continue.
