Contributions to ACES: I've been lucky enough to attend five ACES conferences since 1999 and have made the most of all the seminars, contributing to the discussions. In Denver I served as a volunteer and donated items for the auction -- but I'm ready to do more. Qualifications: "The desk" has been my home for 20 years. Although I've spent the last 11 years at a big paper, I cut my teeth at a 30,000-circulation daily in Central Florida and later worked at a 100,000 daily. My husband is an editor at a 17,000-circulation weekly. So I understand the challenges that many of our members face. Vision for ACES:Tough times and an erosion of standards threaten our publications -- and our jobs. I want to help in the fight to shore up our profession against the pressures of staff cuts and "good enough" journalism that seem to be growing, especially as newspapers enter the dot-com era. 1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing? How about a strike? Kidding! Lack of visibility is a big problem for us: If we do a good job, we're invisible. ACES can help by gathering suggestions from members on how to blow your own horn, in a diplomatic way, to management -- for example, our deskers keep anonymous tabs of the fact errors we catch nightly and include the statistics in our annual reviews. We figure all together we save the paper an average of 35 corrections per day. Hard facts like that get you noticed. 2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable? Something that could be useful right about now would be a resume-review service offering critiques and tweaks. There are a lot of experienced managers in ACES who have seen a lot of resumes and know what works and what doesn't. 3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them? 1. Have a contest among members challenging them to get new members to sign up. The one who gets the most to join would win a prize. 2. While it would probably be too expensive to hire a PR firm to help publicize ACES, perhaps there's a firm out there that would do some work for us in exchange for some free copy editing help? |
