CANDIDATE PROFILES

Sara Hendricks

Temple Daily Telegram, running for vice president/membership

Current job: Night editor; supervises news copy desk and photographers

Contributions to ACES: I was instrumental in opening full membership to copy editors outside the news industry. Monthly I contact people who have not renewed their membership -- often successfully reminding them to renew. Currently, I am leading the mentor program and contacting non-news companies to encourage them to join and/or attend the conference.

Qualifications: I have programs in progress I would like to complete; others I would like to get fully organized. The mentor program, for instance, requires me to stay in touch with mentors/mentees to ensure the program is working as intended. I remain committed to the goals of ACES and would like to continue playing an active part.

Vision for ACES: By offering full membership to copy editors outside of the news industry, we can grow and offer training to a wide variety of professionals.

1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing?

Blow your horns! Let managers know the factual errors, the potentially libelous and unfair statements you find in stories. Avoid the a-ha's. Instead, write a weekly newsletter that goes to managers -- minus reporter names, of course. Keep examples of run-on sentences and other bad writing. Include the samples and your final product in the newsletter. Talk to reporters about their stories. You'll be surprised how many will be glad you caught something that sounded perfectly sane to them. Oftentimes, I've gotten the same mistakes from a reporter over and over, only to find out they didn't know they were doing anything wrong. Good managers will see you doing this and be happy everyone's getting along.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

We've started the mentoring program and will soon get the internship under way. Beyond that, I believe our strong suits are training and advocacy. More regional workshops would be wonderful. We just need more volunteers to help organize them.

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

We should start advertising in places where copy editors are looking: other organizations' newsletters, Web sites.
