2009 ELECTION

CANDIDATE PROFILES

Niko Dugan

News-Gazette (Champaign, Ill.), running for Executive Committee

Current job: Copy editor: Layout, edit and paginate local news and features pages. Serves as backup news slot and weekend slot

Contributions to ACES: Niko has been active since going to the Hollywood conference as a student. He has attended every national conference since, financing parts of the trips himself and hosting discussions at his paper upon returning. He assisted ACES in Miami and Denver and has regularly contributed to the online discussion board.

Qualifications: Niko has quickly taken on new responsibilities at his paper, helping to train others after a software upgrade and fighting as a union negotiator to assert the copy desk's right to jurisdiction over his paper's Web site. He is committed to using that drive to help further ACES' cause.

Vision for ACES: Niko wants to improve networking and recruiting efforts, especially for younger members and those at smaller publications, by making better use of online resources, including Facebook, Twitter and the ACES Web site. He is committed to assuring recognition and respect for copy editors during a tough time for the industry.

1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry?

ACES must strive to help copy editors increase their presence in the workplace, specifically regarding the biggest change in the industry -- the shift to the Web. ACES must help copy editors ensure that their jobs do not get lost in the shuffle by providing tools and instruction on Web-based editing and help for those who edit both a print and Web product. ACES must serve as a collective voice to employers to let them know that quality always trumps speed, and having it first means nothing if it's not right.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

First, ACES needs to build on its regional conferences held throughout the year, working more closely with its chapters to establish rigidity in their frequency and scheduling. Second, the online message board and revamped Web site are a good start but must be expanded upon. The Web site's front page should be updated more often, perhaps with addition of a few established features (i.e., the president's corner), and social-networking sites, especially Facebook, should be used to their maximum potential. ACES must improve its accessibility, and the Web is the perfect tool.

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

ACES needs to take a far-reaching approach to increasing its presence. Besides the ideas provided in the last question, a promotional direct-mail or e-mail campaign to employers would increase awareness. The ultimate goal should be the establishment of local liaisons -- ideally, one person at each outlet where ACES could or does have members who could represent the organization, spread the word to other prospective members in the area and report to a regional committee so that tools and lessons can be tailored to specific publication sizes and demands.
