2009 ELECTION

<< Elizabeth Cernota Clark | Niko Dugan >>

CANDIDATE PROFILES

Matthew Crowley

Las Vegas Review-Journal, running for Executive Committee

Current job: Business copy editor/Las Vegas Review-Journal. Edit copy for daily business section and weekly Las Vegas Business Press. Maintain departmental stylebook. Write headlines, paginate pages.

Contributions to ACES: Matthew has been the most prodigious contributor to the newsletter. His interest in and knowledge of copy-editing points and issues are exceptional.

Qualifications: He is dependable, creative, a font of ideas. He does what he says he will do and is never at a loss for new things to do.

Vision for ACES: "I'd like to help expand the organization's base to include more copy editors from other fields. A broader base will allow a valuable exchange of ideas; the existing membership from newspapers and magazines will gain new perspectives. I'd also like to help get our new mentoring program going. There are lots of people with lots of great perspectives and we'll all benefit by helping the next generation of editors."

1. How should ACES respond to the changes sweeping the news industry? Specifically, how should ACES help convince managers of the value of copy editing?

ACES should continue, both at its national convention and regional workshops, to offer lessons that focus on nuts-and-bolts issues of copy editing. These skills will matter in whatever format editors work in, whether print or online. One way to show our value is to higher-ups is to point out to examples of things we catch every day; managers can't acknowledge what they don't see.

2. What additional services or benefits should ACES offer its members while keeping dues affordable?

Moving the job board and perhaps a mentor-match board that could connect editors industry peers for idea sharing to a members-only section of the Web site would provide an added membership benefit. Online Webinars or podcasts on copy editing topics could also let us share ideas widely and fairly cheaply.

3. What would you do to get the word out about ACES to copy editors who aren't aware we are out there for them?

Building on the online groups we've formed on LinkedIn and Facebook can help ACES members can connect with nonmembers. They're one more channel on which to tout the benefits of ACES membership. We could use the "wall" on an ACES Facebook page or the discussion form feature of LinkedIn to discuss topics or to complement the discussion board on copydesk.org.
