CANDIDATE PROFILES

Elizabeth Cernota Clark

Lecturer, running for Executive Committee

Current job: Lecturer, School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Currently teaching two sections of "Editing for Clear Communication."

Contributions to ACES: I've introduced students to ACES resources during the six years that I've taught college and advised The Lasso (Texas Woman's University) and The News Argus (Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina). Guest speakers have included copy editors Gene Zipperlen and Ruthanne Brockway of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and Karen Parker of the Winston-Salem Journal.

Qualifications: I've witnessed a 35-year journalistic evolution. The closing of the TWU program--along with having worked for two now-defunct newspapers (Chicago Daily News, Dallas Times-Herald) -- made me acutely aware of the need for continuing education. Working with campus newspapers and the First Amendment Institute (Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas) reinforced my interest in press freedom.

Vision for ACES: I would encourage development of Web-based mini-courses and workshops for students and working professionals. I would also encourage greater communication with students about ACES regional programs, conferences and scholarships. When students realize they have potential as copy editors, they're often surprised; copy editing as a career path is usually not on their radar.
