2010 electionElected board membersSchmedding to lead as society's fourth presidentTwo officer positions and six seats on the ACES Executive Committee were up for election in 2010. Teresa Schmedding of the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago ran unopposed for president and Lisa McLendon of The Wichita Eagle ran unopposed for vice president of conferences. The five incumbents running for re-election -- Gerri Berendzen (Quincy Herald-Whig), Sue Blair (retired from Time magazine), William G. Connolly (retired from The New York Times), Christine Steele (Capital Group Cos.) and David Sullivan (The Philadelphia Inquirer) -- retained their seats, and will be joined by Niko Dugan of the (Champaign, Ill.) News-Gazette. Also joining the board will be Sue Burzynski Bullard of the University of Nebraska, who as the next-highest vote-getter will assume the seat of the board member who takes over the office of secretary, which McLendon will vacate. Sullivan will take over the secretary position, having been approved by the board during its meeting at the Philadelphia conference. As past president, Chris Wienandt will retain a seat on the board for a two-year term. All of the board members thanks Deirdre Edgar, outgoing vice president of conferences, for her many years of hard work and dedication to the society. It also thanks outgoing board member Peter Parisi. New board members take their seats May 17. Who can run for office?The American Copy Editors Society conducts elections each year for its Executive Committee. The number of positons vary by year, as the officers and board positions are staggered. Candidates are announced during the annual conference. ELIGIBILITY: Nominations can be made by anyone who is a member in good standing by a date determined by the board. This date usually falls around the first of the year. A prospective candidate may nominate himself or herself. Full, associate, student and scholastic members are eligible to make nominations, but all nominees must be full members of ACES. All nominees who comply with the requirements on the nomination form will be accepted as candidates and listed on the ballot. TERMS: Two years DUTIES: Members of the Executive Committee shape the policy of the society and take on responsibility for projects and routine tasks. Officers have additional duties, as outlined in the bylaws at www.copydesk.org/about/bylaws.php. ACES operates by virtue of the voluntary efforts of its members, and anyone seeking a seat on the Executive Committee must be willing to spend a few hours each week on the business of the organization. Tasks can include, but aren't limited to, researching topics, contacting sources, organizing meetings, making phone calls, sending e-mails, writing proposals and newsletter articles, working on surveys and fundraising. Members of the Executive Committee also are expected to attend the national conference and other periodic meetings, as well as to take part in a monthly conference call.
