Georgia Adams Langerfeld

Georgia Adams Langerfeld graduated from the University of West Florida in spring 2010 and went on to a Dow Jones internship at the Roanoke (Va.) Times. During her senior year, she was editor-in-chief of the student paper, the Voyager, and now is a copy editor/page designer at the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal. From her application: “When I first started taking college classes, I wanted to be an English-to-Japanese translator. By the time I graduated, I’d spent a year in Japan as an exchange student, and I realized that I’m much more interested in being an English-to-English translator.” Judge’s comment: “Georgia points out that a copy editor is not only a story’s last editor but also its first reader, showing a sophisticated understanding of the multifaceted nature of a copy editor’s role in the process. Her headlines were engaging without relying on the easy pun. And, wow, it looks like it would take the eagle eye of a copy editor to find anything other than an ‘A’ on her transcript.”
