The American Copy Editors Society Education has awarded five students with 2009-10 scholarships: Shannon Epps, Hampton University; Emily Ingram, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Robin Kawakami, City University, London; William Powell, University of Missouri; and Caitlin Saniga, Kent State University.
As the top candidate among the applicants, Epps was named the Aubespin scholar and received $2,500. Other winners each received $1,000. In addition, winners were given free registration to the Philadelphia conference and, for the first time, $400 for conference travel expenses.
The winners were selected from 21 applicants, judged by five professional copy editors. The judges were Paula Devlin of The Times-Picayune of New Orleans; Kris Eldred of The Fresno (Calif.) Bee; Lourdes Fernandez of Newsday; Farah Fleurima of The Dallas Morning News publication Quick; and Vince Rinehart of The Washington Post. The ACES Education Fund board approved the judges’ recommendations.
ACES has now awarded 49 scholarships since 1999.
