Rachel Hanson, selected her senior year at the University of Utah, is committed to learning the nuts-and-bolts of the copy editing craft. As managing editor of The Daily Utah Chronicle, she runs the budget meetings, edits every story and writes headlines, working with reporters and editors at every step. In addition, she compiled and revised a 75-page style and policy manual.
Hanson discovered copy editing as a junior and dove right in. One of her advisers at the university, in Salt Lake City, wrote that “in more than 20 years of teaching, I have never known a student so well-equipped for the study and practice of copy editing, nor one so eager.”
