Kristen Huth, chosen as a senior at Pennsylvania State University in State College, impressed the judges with her polished work samples, strong academic record, and thoughtful, earnest essay on copy editing. “Freedom of information is the foundation of a free society,” she wrote, “and copy editors ensure that newspapers distribute that information accurately.”
A four-year staffer of The Daily Collegian, Huth helped revive the Penn State chapter of ACES and served as president of the campus chapter of the Society of News Design.
She was a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund editing intern in the summer of 2008 at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk. “Kristen shows a maturity beyond her age, a strong work ethic, and the ability to edit copy quickly and accurately,” her supervisor said in recommending her for an ACES scholarship.
