The American Copy Editors Society has selected five winners of its 2007-08 scholarships: Jennifer Amur, University of Missouri; Wendy Lyons, Oakland University; Mark Noack, University of Oregon; Dianne Smith, University of Kansas, and Shanxi Upsdell, University of Kansas.
As the top candidate among the applicants, Upsdell was named the Aubespin scholar and was awarded $2,500. The other winners each receive $1,000. In addition, each scholar received free registration to ACES’ 2008 National Conference in Denver.
The winners were selected from a group of 21 applicants, judged by five professional copy editors. The judges were Suzanne Behnke of The Des Moines Register; Lourdes Fernandez of Newsday; Henry Fuhrmann of the Los Angeles Times; Pam Spencer of The Kansas City Star; and Doris Truong of The Washington Post.
The judges’ recommendations were approved by the board of the ACES Education Foundation.
The 2007-08 scholarships bring the total awarded to 39 since 1999.
