ACES Education Fund

An affiliate of the American Copy Editors Society

Finding and hiring talented copy editors has always been challenging, but a world hungry for information needs copy editors more than ever. To help meet that need, the American Copy Editors Society has awarded scholarships to deserving students since 1999.

There are now five awards to college juniors, seniors and graduate students each year: four scholarships of $1,000 each and one of $2,500. The largest grant is named for Merv Aubespin, the "godfather" of ACES. (Click here to see the most recent winners.)

The ACES Education Fund Inc. was established in 2004 to administer the awards and to raise money to assure that we can continue to provide them.

To date, the scholarships have been underwritten by ACES and the proceeds of the silent auction at the national conference. The goal of the Education Fund, a 501(c)3 corporation, is to create an endowment large enough to sustain the scholarships indefinitely. At current rates of return, that will require at least $130,000, and the Fund is more than 25 percent short of that target.

Merv Aubespin was a pivotal voice behind the formation of ACES in the late 1990s.

College juniors, seniors and graduate students who have demonstrated an interest in and aptitude for copy editing have until Nov. 15 to apply for several scholarships awarded each year by the ACES Education Fund, an affiliate of the American Copy Editors Society. The top award, for $2,500, is named for Merv Aubespin, a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists, a longtime champion of copy editors and, as the chairman of the Human Resources Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in the mid-1990s, the "godfather" of ACES.

The other four awards are for $1,000 each.

The scholarships are open to students who will be college juniors, seniors or graduate students in the fall, and to graduating students who will take full-time copy editing jobs or internships. Applications will be evaluated by a panel of five experienced copy editors.
