Mervin R. Aubespin, a past president of NABJ from 1983-1985, is a founding director of the ACES Education Fund. Considered the “godfather” of ACES, he is a lifelong champion of copy editors and, as the chairman of the Human Resources Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors in the mid-1990s, helped develop the idea of the American Copy Editors Society. The top scholarship award is named in his honor. For 34 years, he worked as an artist, reporter and editor at the the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. He was named the 2010 recipient of Louisville’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award and is a member of the Kentucky Journalists Hall of Fame.
