Quick note on crime stories

William Hickman, professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, explained on Friday the intricacies of editing crime. After going through general libel laws, he laid out ways copy editors could avoid trouble in cops and courts stories.

Making sense out of what police say can be a challenge, he said. The solution is in the word choice.

Among his bigger points, Hickman discussed whether it is ever OK to say “allegedly,” the proper way to use “suspect,” and the dangers of saying someone is “arrested for” a crime.

Bumpy road next 350 words: Edit carefully

You’ve finished editing the article about the local middle school’s annual barbecue. It wasn’t any brain strainer, and you’ve whisked through it, confident that you’ve caught everything. You corrected the misspelling of Principal Maude Lynne Trautvetter’s name. You grabbed out the commas that the writer has liberally salted his work with, exchanged a few of them for compound-adjective hyphens and tossed the rest over your shoulder for good luck. You rewrote the sentence “The teachers cooked and served the students” and laughed your head off (it’s late in the day). You press Send, and it’s out of your hair.
