Since the formation of the American Copy Editors Society, ACES leadership has recognized the value to the organization — and to the future of the profession — of copy editing students.
Scholarships from the ACES Education Fund have supported many editing student in achieving their goals throughout the years.
A new way ACES is helping support copy editing students, and allowing students to give back to the organization, is through an internship working on the ACES newsletter and content portion of the Web site.
The intern would generate content about issues concerning copy editors and editing, or do other newsletter work under the direction of the editor. The internship pays $600, $300 halfway through the project and $300 upon completion.
The time frame and work hours of the internship are flexible, though we expect the internship to span the equivalent of a semester’s work. The student would work from home and could do the internship while attending classes.
The deadline for applications is Sept. 30. (Download the application here.)
Any students applying must be a member in good standing of the American Copy Editors Society and be currently enrolled in college, seeking a degree in the journalism/communications field. Graduates who received their degree in the past three months are also eligible.
Anyone who is interested in applying can fill out the application on this Web site or contact ACES Executive Committee members Gerri Berendzen at gber...@whig.com or Teresa Schmedding at tsch...@dailyherald.com for more information.
And when it comes to the newsletter and Web content, ACES also welcomes the volunteer help of any of its members. We’d like to hear from people about what issues and topics they would like to see covered.
If you have a story idea, or are interested in writing stories for the newsletter or Web site, e-mail me at gber...@whig.com.
