Your ACES board: What it’s doing, July

The ACES board now has a major change in its makeup, as Merrill Perlman, president of the ACES Education Fund board, joins as an ex-officio, non-voting member in August.

The board made the move to keep the two groups in strong contact. Bill Connolly for years wore both hats. With his stepping down as Ed Fund president, both boards felt that a formal link was needed.

New ideas for reaching out to members, raising revenue, and redefining the organization’s IRS status will continue to be worked on by the board at its August meeting, as well as pinning down a site for the 2012 conference.

Letter to newspaper executives

Dear Newspaper CEO:

Being the person who decides what jobs get cut, what departments reorganize, who gets let go is really one of the crappiest jobs out there. No one praises the captain when the seas are rough, but many blame you for the rough ride (and plenty know how they’d steer differently).

So I wanted to salute you and thank you for making those tough calls so the newspaper stays in business. I know you’ve lost many hours of sleep. (more…)

Gannett’s hub-bub

This week’s decision by Gannett Co. to put all its design eggs in five baskets has drawn comment on the new ACES blog of Charles Apple. Read his comments here. At my blog “That’s the Press, Baby” I’ve added a few observations. See them here. You can also see the open letter written by the Society of News Design. That is here.
