‘Is that a new look,’ you say?

Why, yes, it is.

ACES is constantly looking at ways to improve itself, and one of the biggest areas we do this is through our website. It’s come a long way from the days of Pam Robinson, who tirelessly updated and filled copydesk.org with tons of useful information. As the webmaster duties have changed hands, from her to Jeff Pierron to me, the original goals have stayed the same: bring members information about ACES and use the site as a clearinghouse for training, education and resources.

A new addition to the forums

Today, ACES has launched a Freelancers Forum on the discussion board (view it at here) and encourage members in the freelance market or anyone who is thinking about becoming a freelancer to contribute to the discussion.

The idea came from member Mark Allen, who is a frequent contributor to the newsletter and one of our biggest Twitter evangelists. He’ll be moderating the forum and lending his knowledge to the fold.

If you’d like join the forum, please register THEN e-mail webmaster Daniel Hunt with your screen name to activate the account.

I’m happy to announce you no longer need to send me an e-mail. Self-activation is now available. Go nuts, folks.

Looking for a newsletter intern … and ideas

Since the formation of the American Copy Editors Society, ACES leadership has recognized the value to the organization — and to the future of the profession — of copy editing students.

Scholarships from the ACES Education Fund have supported many editing student in achieving their goals throughout the years.

A new way ACES is helping support copy editing students, and allowing students to give back to the organization, is through an internship working on the ACES newsletter and content portion of the Web site. (more…)

Call for suggestions

The redesign is under way for copydesk.org. Most of our work so far has revolved around the back end of the Web site, including our secure and encrypted database for membership information and processing, as well as the overall look and feel of the site. And while the board has come up with some new initiatives and features for the Web site, including a revamping of our resources pages, we’re curious to know what you, our members, would like to see ACES deliver. Among some of the suggestions received that we’ll be implementing:

  • An overhaul and expansion of the resources pages
  • Newsletter PDFs and articles posted for members only online
  • A searchable members-only directory
  • Online forms for membership and events registration

But there’s gotta be more to it, right? Here’s where you come in. If you’ve got an idea, feel free to post it here in the comments or e-mail thedanielhunt@gmail.com.
