PITTSBURGH (March 27, 2015) — The American Copy The American Copy Editors Society Society named its seventh Glamann Award winner – Steve Buttry — at its national conference today. Buttry, a Lamar Family Visiting Scholar at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University, was presented with the award via Skype by ACES President Teresa Schmedding.

Buttry was “gob smacked” when he was told he was this year’s Glamann Award recipient.

The Glamann Award is named for Hank Glamann, ACES co-founder and a former national board member. The award recognizes people and organizations that have contributed to the Society and the craft of copy editing. Each year’s recipient is chosen by the ACES Board of Directors.

The committee chose Buttry as this year’s recipient because of his everlasting willingness to use his time to pass along knowledge to students, editors, journalists and copy editors, and for his longstanding contributions to the Society.

“You are quality control for the news business and beyond … and I appreciate everything you have done for me, for the news business and the organizations you work for,” said Buttry in his acceptance speech.

Most recently, he generously donated his time to help with ACES’ plagiarism project. Also, he continually promotes the Society’s book, other efforts and the value of being a part of the organization.

“I have a fondness for copy editing and copy editors … I learned more in my copy editing class than in any other course I took at Texas Christian University back in the 1970s,” Buttry said.

He has always advocated to bring the copy desk along with the digital movement, and for this, ACES commends him.

“The true gift you’ve given us as editors is showing us that the future lies not in fear, anger and fighting, but in sharing, challenging and exploring,” Schmedding said in her speech. “Thanks for being one of us on this journey. You make us eager to see what’s around the bend.”
