Position: Vice President / Membership (one-year term)
Candidate: Christine Steele
Job title: Senior copy editor
At: The Capital Group, Los Angeles
Job description: Copy edits brochures, white papers, commentaries, and shareholder reports for financial advisers and shareholders. Maintains department style guide and various style sheets. Leader/mentor for other copy editors.
How has the nominee contributed to ACES?
Christine has been a member for 11 years and on the board for three. She has developed press releases and stories for events and awards within ACES, copyedits the quarterly newsletter, presents workshops at several conferences, and currently chairs the Robinson Prize committee. She also has helped organize training materials for non-newspaper copy editors.
What makes the nominee the best candidate for this position?
She’s already been a part of making decisions for the benefit of the society and its members. She’s well-organized and has proven she can handle multiple tasks required of board members. As a corporate copy editor, Christine can bring a different perspective to the board and help increase membership of non-newspaper members.
If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during his or her tenure?
She envisions that the nontraditional copy editors and the traditional ones will be better connected. She also hopes that more non-newspaper copy editors will have joined ACES because they’ve improved their knowledge and understanding of the society (in part by more publicity) and know that it benefits them greatly, just like it would any other copy editor.
The recession seems to be ending, but it has left behind a changed media landscape. Assuming ACES continues to be financially stable, what is the most important thing the group should spend some money toward achieving?
ACES should spend more money improving its website for members and the public. It would be beneficial to have a members-only section and be able to access articles and conference archives from as far back as possible. This would especially help potential new members understand what ACES is all about and the depth of what we offer.
