Biography

Lisa copy-edits news stories and writes display type, prepares the print product nightly, maintains the website, tweets and blogs for Grammar Monkeys, and has some supervisory duties. Since joining ACES in 2000, she has presented at conferences, helped organize regional workshops, and worked to raise the profile of ACES at work and among students.

Lisa, who joined the board as secretary in 2007, seeks a second full term as vice president/conferences. The first ACES conference she organized as conference VP (Phoenix) came in under budget and had a wide offering of sessions, in keeping with ACES’ mission to represent all copy editors. She notes that she has made it through the learning curve and knows what needs to be done and how to do it. She plans to continue working to offer diverse, up-to-date sessions at the national conference to keep it the premier training for copy editors. She also plans to increase the number of regional workshops.

ACES’ question to candidate

You’re running for re-election to a post you’ve held for two years. What are the most important things you have learned in the office? What will you do differently in your second term?

I’ve learned so much more than I can summarize in 150 words! Putting on a conference is a huge process that requires hard work from a lot of people, and I feel like I’ve only just gotten over a hump in the learning curve. For my next term, I plan to work on expanding the program even more, so that the sessions cover a broader range of topics and speakers. My goal is to hear “There’s so much that I couldn’t go to everything I wanted to.” I also plan to keep working on ways to ensure the conference is as affordable as possible, so that as many people who would like to attend can. And I want to increase the number of regional workshops that ACES offers, so that our members all across the country can have training and networking opportunities.
