About ACES

WHAT IS ACES?

ACES, the American Copy Editors Society, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) education and membership organization working toward the advancement of copy editors. Our aim is to provide solutions to editing problems, training and a place to discuss common issues. ACES is an international members’ alliance of editors working at newspapers, magazines, websites, traditional media outlets, Fortune 500, as well as freelance editors, students and their professors. Some may think of us as grammar geeks, punctuation freaks and syntax-obsessed snobs; in reality, we’re an organization built on the needs of our members and the advocacy of editing as a craft vital to clear writing and reader advocacy.

WHEN DID ACES FORM?

ACES was started in 1997 by Pam Robinson of Long Island, N.Y., and Hank Glamann of Houston as a group to foster support and awareness of copy editors, primarily in newspapers. Their idea grew from responses surveyed by the American Society of News Editors in 1996. Our first conference was in Chapel Hill, N.C., not long after. Since then, we’ve hosted yearly national conferences and several other regional workshops and boot camps to train, reinforce and acknowledge solid copy-editing skills. We’ve also grown into a place where editors from newspapers and beyond can meet like-minded colleagues and network for job advancement, shared training, troubleshooting and, what we like best, camaraderie.

WHERE IS ACES LOCATED?

The leaders of ACES work for companies across the United States. (Our mailing address, because we needed one, is in Indianapolis.) But we have members in nearly every state, as well as other countries. We thought about changing the name to ICES a couple of times, but we like the acronym we’ve got a lot more.

HOW DOES ACES FULFILL ITS MISSION?

Although many editors know of ACES through its annual conference, which is held in a different city each year, we organize workshops and events year-round and foster alliances with other organizations — such as ASNE, SND, APME, APSE, API and the Poynter Institute — to bring quality training and other opportunities to our members. Our website, is a clearinghouse for resources and a place for our members to discuss and learn about trends in the industry.

WHY DOES ACES DO THIS?

Building upon the original idea of our founders, the leaders and volunteers of ACES are dedicated to keeping editing at the forefront of communication and helping our members sharpen their skills. We are the face of editors from all industries and walks of life and lend our voice to issues that affect them. We recognize quality work and the people who do it. And, above all, we are committed to providing a place for those who polish, tweak, refine and improve the words of the world.
