Three join ACES board after 2013 election

ACES has a new vice president for membership and three new board members, all from outside of newsrooms for the first time in its history, as a result of the election held in February 2013.

This year, 210 members voted, the highest total in three years.

Christine Steele, of the Capital Group Companies, Los Angeles, a member of the Executive Committee, was elected vice president/membership, running unopposed. She succeeds Sara Hendricks, who chose not to seek reelection. Steele was elected to a one-year term, as designated by the Executive Committee as it reviews the leadership structure of the society. Incumbent officers David Sullivan, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, secretary, and Neil Holdway, of the Daily Herald, Arlington Heights, Ill., treasurer, were reelected without opposition to two-year terms.

Five candidates sought three open two-year terms on the board. Elected were: John Braun, of the Vanguard Group, Malvern, Pa.; Samantha Enslen, of Dragonfly Editing, Tipp City, Ohio; Regina McDowell, of the U.S. Department of Defense, Washington.

A closer look

If you were concerned by reports last week suggesting that copy editing positions had declined nearly twice as fast as reporting or management positions, you should have been. The numbers aren’t as scary as they look, but they’re still worth attention — not least because they help editors frame the importance of what they do in real-world terms.

And there’s every reason to be concerned about some things the ASNE census survey doesn’t address: how much more work goes into each of those editing jobs, for example, or how many sets of eyes see the average cop-and-crime story before publication now, as opposed to a decade ago.
