The American Copy Editors Society is entering into a training alliance with The Poynter Institute’s News University. As part of the agreement, Poynter NewsU will provide discounted training for ACES members in exchange for ACES contributions on several Poynter NewsU training initiatives.
As part of the training initiative, ACES and Poynter will create an editing certification program that will include several copy editing courses.
“The certification program will allow both entry-level and advanced editors to walk away from the training with something tangible they can show potential employers,” said Teresa Schmedding, ACES president.
NewsU and ACES also will jointly produce a series of Webinars on copy editing. The first Webinar in this series, The Art and Science of Editing, will be Oct. 3. The Webinar will be led by Merrill Perlman, president of the ACES Education Fund. For information and registration, go to http://www.newsu.org/art-science-editing. These Webinars will be available to the public for $29.95, but ACES members will be able to attend for just $9.95. For all other NewsU courses, ACES members will receive a 25 percent discount.
ACES members also will contribute content to expand the “Language Primer,” a self-directed grammar module that Poynter offers.
“Both ACES and Poynter are known for their dedication to high-quality training so it’s a natural fit for us to work together,” Schmedding said. ”This partnership is a perfect blend of mutual goals and strengths for both organizations. Together we can broaden the practical, low-cost training opportunities for editors.”
This training alliance presents an opportunity for NewsU and ACES to work together to deliver training that’s uniquely suited for copy editors, but that also holds appeal for NewsU’s broader community. ACES executive committee members will play a significant role in shaping the training initiatives by developing learning objectives and producing content for the Webinars, new editing courses and the certificate program.
“We are excited about this partnership with ACES, ” said Howard Finberg, Poynter’s director of training partnerships and alliances. “Not only are we able to develop training that fits this unique audience, but we are establishing a training alliance model that we can use with other similar organizations.”
ACES members should watch their email for more information on upcoming training and for the members-only Poynter discount code.
