Two repeatchampions were among the five
individual winners in the ACES headline contest

Jim Thomsen(Kitsap, Wash., Sun) receives his plaque and $500 check fromACES board member Paula Devlin for winning Division I (50,000-circulation or under) of the 2006 ACES headline contest. The results wereannounced April 19 at the opening session of the ACES nationalconference in Miami.


Peter Donahue of TheProvidence Journal and Lauren Raab of the UCLA Daily Bruinalso won their divisions in 2005, and Donahue was a 2002 winner.
Three past winners, including two repeat champions, wereamong the winners in the 2006 ACES headline contest.

Peter Donahue of the Providence Journal in Rhode Island won DivisionII (100,001 to 250,000 circulation) for the second consecutive yearand became the first three-time winner in the seven-year historyof the contest. He also won in 2002.

Lauren Raab of the The Daily Bruin at the University of Californiaat Los Angeles captured the student division for the second yearin a row.

Michael Roehrman of the Wichita Eagle, who won his division in2002, returned to the winner's circle with a first place in DivisionIII (50,001 to 100,000).

A total of $2,250 in cash prizes was awarded in the contest,along with plaques and certificates. Results were announced duringthe opening session of the ACES national conference in Miami onApril 19.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune had the top entry in the staff category,and The New York Times was runner-up.

Other individual winners were Rachel Dunn of the Los Angeles Timesin Division I (newspapers with circulations of 250,001 or more andall non-newspapers) and Jim Thomsen of the Kitsap (Wash.) Sun inDivision IV (50,000 or less). Dunn's Los Angeles Times colleagueLaura Dominick won Division I in 2005.

Barbara Kerr Page of the Albuquerque Tribune won the award of excellencein Division III, marking the third time in contest history she hasbeen a runner-up. (The other years were 2003 and 2004). Awards ofexcellence also were given to Bill Walsh of the Washington Postin Division I and Rebecca Young of the Tacoma (Wash.) News Tribune inDivision II.

The winners of Divisions I through IV received $500 checks andplaques, and the student winner received $250 and a framed certificate.A plaque and individual framed certificates were awarded to thewinning staff. All runners-up received framed certificates.


Each division had its own set of judges. Headlines published fromDec. 1, 2005, to Nov. 30, 2006, were eligible.
