On to Miami!

The 10th ACES conference
wraps up a memorable
three-day run in Cleveland

The stirring story of the perseverance of journalists and their city in the face of natural disaster.

The suspense of the inaugural presentation of copy editing's highest honor.

Proud recognition of the craft's finest headline writers and brightest young scholars.

Spirited bidding in an auction to benefit good causes.

A hip-hop closing ceremony and a Cajun-themed party in a city that rocks.

More than 60 training sessions brimming with the energy of copy editors eager to learn.

Ideas exchanged, friendships made, and acquaintances renewed.

Those will be some of the memories for the more than 420 copy editors who attended the 10th American Copy Editors Society conference April 20-22 in Cleveland.

Follow the links to learn more about the conference and the craft that ACES and its members so enthusiastically embrace and uphold.

And start planning now to join us in Miami for the 2007 conference April 19-21.

HEADLINE CONTEST

Headline writers in six divisions won a total of $2,250 in cash as well as plaques and certificates in ACES' annual headline contest.

BANQUET

Robinson Prize winner Paul Soucy, left, of USA Today, and Aubespin scholar Diego Sorbara, of the University of Missouri, were recognized at the conference banquet. Go here to read more about them.

ACES board member Paula Devlin and her New Orleans Times-Picayune colleague James O'Byrne brought their stories and insights about the Hurricane Katrina disaster -- and the paper's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of it -- to the conference. Read about their "Dealing with Disaster" session and about O'Byrne's keynote speech at the banquet. There's also a page with the full text of the address, and a reprint of an ACES newsletter article on how copy editors in New Orleans and Biloxi, Miss., coped with the storm.

AUCTION

Mary Armstrong (New York Times News Services) bids on a package of See's Candies in the silent auction.

The ACES auction raised $4,950.96 in the silent portion to benefit the ACES Education Fund and $3,075 in the live portion to aid The Times-Picayune Hurricane Relief Fund. Read the auction story.

Three new members have been elected to the ACES board -- from left, Gerri Berendzen, John Boogert and Anne Ferguson-Rohrer -- along with incumbent Sue Blair. Read the story.

OPENING GENERAL SESSION

ACES scholars, from left, Diego Sorbara, Caroline Hauser and Kathryn Schwing soak up the applause at the opening general session. Three of the five scholarship winners attended the conference.
