opy editors at The New York Times, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Tampa Tribune were among the winners of the American Copy Editors Society’s 2004 headline contest. Recipients split $2,250 in prizes at the awards ceremony held Thursday, the opening day of the society’s ninth annual conference.

The New York Times won the staff division with a portfolio of news and features headlines that judges said displayed "a deep connection to the tone and substance of the stories." Contributing editors included Phil Corbett, Janet Higbie, Debbie Leiderman, Mindy Matthews, Kathleen McElroy, Lisanne Renner, Karin Roberts Rachel Saltz, Carl Sommers, John Storm, Doug Ward and Ron Wertheimer.

The Tampa Tribune received honorable mention in the staff division. Its portfolio of hard-news headlines was devoted to coverage of last summer’s deadly hurricane season. Judges commended the headlines "for being clear, powerful and inventive for what seems almost certain to have been the biggest story of the year for its readers." Contributing editors were Shane Blatt, Joe Emerson, Craig Gemoules, Jody Habayeb, Cindy Hutchinson, Stacey Shick, Fred Stone, Janet Weaver and Greg Williams.

Liz Miniet, a copy editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was the winner in the individual division for copy editors at newspapers with circulations of 250,000-plus). Her headlines, judges noted, were "clear and accurate" and "fully appropriate in content and tone."

A total of 240 entries was received.

Naomi Seldin, a copy editor at the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union, is coordinator of the headline contest and an incoming member of the ACES Executive Committee.
