Hank Glamann is a newsroom trainer and consultant
who specializes in editing issues. He has worked as a newspaperman for 25 years,
including more than 20 as an editor at major metropolitan dailies. Most recently,
he was assistant managing editor of The Plain Dealer.
Glamann is a founder of the American Copy Editors Society and the senior member of
the organization’s Executive Committee. He has raised many thousands of dollars for
ACES and has had a hand in launching many of the society’s programs and initiatives.
He has long been active in efforts to advance the cause of the copy editor, and has
worked extensively as a journalism educator. He has spoken at numerous regional and
national events, including all nine national conferences of ACES, national conventions
of ASNE and the Associated Press Managing Editors, and National Writers Workshops.
Before joining The Plain Dealer, he was executive news editor of the Houston Chronicle,
where he directed the operations of the news desk and was the newspaper’s senior
editor on deadline. He supervised the design and copy editing of a number of award-winning
Chronicle special projects, including two finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in international
reporting.
He was named a recipient of the 1998 Hearst Eagle Award, presented to acknowledge
outstanding contributions to the Hearst Corp., parent company of the Chronicle.
The Texas Daily Newspaper Association twice honored Glamann with its John Murphy
Award for Excellence in Copy Editing, in 1990 and 1994. In their citation accompanying
the 1994 award, the TDNA judges described Glamann as “the editor every newspaper
is looking for. He does everything well, everything right. He has the gifted touch,
and passes it along in his work.”
Among his other industry honors are a first-place headline-writing prize from the
Associated Press Managing Editors and multiple design and headline awards from the
Hearst Newspaper Group, the Headliners Foundation, the Houston Press Club and the
Press Club of Dallas.
He has long been active in programs to promote literacy, and was presented the Mayor’s
Award for Literacy Leadership from Houston Mayor Bill White in March 2005.
Before joining the Chronicle, Glamann was copy chief of The Dallas Morning News,
Sunday editor of the Houston Post and a copy editor and news editor at the Galveston
Daily News. He attended the University of Houston, majoring in radio and television,
