The 1998 Conference
More than 400 editors signed up for the second national conference
of the American Copy Editors Society in Portland, Ore. in September. Participants
packed workshops on language, editing, headlines, business, features and
sports and magazines, and industry issues, such as the shortage of copy
editors, newsroom advancement and communications skills for copy editors.Editors
were upbeat in their commentsabout
the conference.

Senior editors participated in a discussion
on how copy editors could rise in the
newsroom. All panelists are former copy
editors. Participating were Peter Bhatia
of The Oregonian, Gene Foreman, recently retired
from the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Jeanette Chavez of the Denver Post, Karen
Wada of The Los Angeles Times and
Mike Waller of the Baltimore Sun.
Much preparation for the conference
went on behind the scenes. Oregonian
editors and ACES representatives,
led by Lynn Louie, stuffed
bags for
participants before the opening
of the second national conference.
Oh, yes, and then there was dancing.
