A journalism must-read has a new home online

American Copy Editors Society and Charles Apple, a leader in infographics and news design for more than 20 years, are pleased to announce the addition of his blog and visual journalism insights to copydesk.org, the online home of ACES.

“Charles is a must-read for anyone who cares about quality journalism,” said ACES President Teresa Schmedding, executive news editor of the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago. “The blog and Charles’ workshops emphasize content-driven design. It’s no secret that the majority of our members do both copy editing and design, and ACES wants to open the lines of communication among editors, designers, artists and reporters — all the roles that define successful and healthy journalism — to figure out what lies ahead.”

While the website’s address is new, Apple said his blog will remain focused on covering industry trends and the important role visuals play for newspapers, new media and the art of storytelling.

“Championing visual journalism, that’s what this blog is all about,” Apple said. “It’s here to support all the journalists out there who design or assemble newspaper pages or websites and the images that go on them. We want to further the art of visual journalism. To champion good work. And to frown upon practices that endanger our ethical or quality standards.

“Most of all, though we’re here to inspire, to teach and to inform visual journalists,” Apple said. “And, sometimes, to entertain them.”

ACES is dedicated to improving the quality of journalism and the working lives of copy editors from all backgrounds. Society President Teresa Schmedding and the society’s Executive Committee recognized Charles’ universal reach and passion for quality, said Daniel Hunt, ACES’ webmaster and a copy editor and designer for The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif. “The majority of our members, myself included, perform dual roles on a daily basis. The disciplines of editing and design seem separate to some, but to most they one in the same. They’re what we do.”

Apple’s appearance on the site is only a hint of what’s to come for members of the society and visitors to the site, Schmedding said. ACES is already exploring adding other blogs and content to copydesk.org, as well as members-only content that will train and enrich editors of all levels.

“It’s an honor to host Charles’ blog, and it’s a new chapter for the society,” Schmedding said. “We hope that by starting with the best, we can expand to bring even more training and resources to our members and anyone who strives for quality in editing and design.”
